1: TRANSISTOR SIX
- Back Yard Rocketship (Blackbean & Placenta) - Our adopted theme tune
so you know where you are. Transistor Six is Frances Castle, there’s lots
of fine art and creativity to explore from Francis so please please do.
You can now get the whole tune downloaded for yourselves and find links
to her artwork, albums, her new Hardy Tree project and lots more over at
www.myspace.com/transistorsix
2: WOMEN – Can’t
You See (Jagjagwar) - – Canada’s rather left field colourfully experimental
other-pop makers Women have a second album out on August 30th, the album
is called Public Strain. The band start the UK leg of a European tour in
Sheffield on August 30th that includes a London date at Cargo on September
1st. The new album sounds equally as good as their well-received 2009 debut.

3: EFEMER –
(Doubledge Scissor) – Efemer are from Warsaw, Poland, theyhave a new two
track single on the ever reliable Doubledge Scissor label, they also play
a Doubledge Scissor night this coming Saturday August 14th, see further
down for more details. The gig and indeed the downloadable single are both
free. No idea how to describe the band, good job we have a radio show then,
a touch of Dead Can Dance, a hint of Peter Hammill, a dark undertone, shadowy?
Eastern European, I don’t know, I know we liked it enough to play both
sides of the single on the show this week – www.myspace.com/efemerband
or www.doubledgescissor.co.cc
4: AGNOSTIC FRONT
– Everybody’s A Critic (Epitaph) – Classic slice of uncompromising
New York hardcore punk rock from the 2001 Dead Yuppies album played in
anticipation of their London gig this coming Thursday 12th August
at the Camden Underworld – www.myspace.com/agnosticfront
5: WOMEN – China
Steps (Jagjagwar) – second track from the impressive new album that comes
out at the end of the month, see track two.
6: BRONTO SKYLIFT
– Burt Bacharacnid (self release) An awkwardly good abrasive two
piece from the top end of Scotland. Played the first three tracks of their
album, The White Crow, for the first time an hour before tonight’s show
and immediately had to reorganise the show, only heard the first three
tracks so far, love the first three tracks, we’ll get to track four and
beyond next time. Abrasive noise, awkward noise, cantankerous shouty spiky
sometimes very heavy noise, primal preciseness and yes, we want more of
this tight controlled clever noise... – www.myspace.com/brontoskylift
7: UNIVERS ZERO –
Les Kobolds (Cuneiform) – The mighty Univers Zero have a new album, Clivages
is the title, “file under rock / chamber rock / experimental / classical”
says the press release, that’s vaguely near, they most certainly deserve
a Prom of their own, this is full on, fully blown, gigantic sounding
classical prog rock. They from Belgium, they’ve been consistently doing
this in their own unique way and on the evidence of this new album, they’re
sounding as expensive as ever. Brilliant! www.myspace.com/universzero
or www.univers-zero.com or www.cuneiformrecords.com
8: BRONTO SKYLIFT
– Tiger (self release) – Second track from the album, see number 6 for
details
9: AUTOLUX – The Bouncing
Wall (ATP) - Track from the L.A trio’s forthcoming album, Transit
Transit,
out on the All Tomorrow’s Parties label on August 30th. Dreamy experimental
pop., lush colours, whispered warmth, other textures, little twists all
of their own. Details that bring the sound to life in such a gloriously
restrained and beautifully soothing way – www.myspace.com/autolux
10: BROWN vs BROWN
– For Michael (Cuneiform) – New name to these ears, excited these ears
the moment the sound came out of the speakers. They’re from Amsterdam,
they have a new album called Odds And Unevens, they have an album title
that kind of describes their sound. Some kind of avant-rock other Jazz
that jumps and jacks and jerks and assembles things in a refreshingly different
hard-boiled way. Expect lots more, we only just started explore the delights
to be found here – www.myspace.com/brownvsbrown
or www.cuneiformrecords.com
11: CUTTHROAT CONVENTION
– What The? (Doubledge Scissor) – Lead track from their recent anti-single.
London’s Cutthroat Convention really are one of those very rare bands genuinely
trying and succeeding in terms of being different. They sound like no one,
they fit nowhere, we need bands who not only want to be different but succeed
in doing so – www.myspace.com/cutthroatconvention
12: EFEMER –
(Doubledge Scissor) – See track three.
13: NOUGHT –
Cough Cap Kitty Cat (Shifty Disco) – This album is now ten years old, we
need some new Nought! Prog rock, English progressive rock that progresses
in all ways. Track from the band’s self-titled debut album, they say they’re
working hard on a new one, they’re one of the best live prog bands out
there right now. www.myspace.com/nought
or www.noughtmusic.com
14: BRONTO SKYLIFT
– Danny Glover Isn’t Dead (self release) – Third track from the album,
see number 6 for details
15: VOIVOD –
Brain Scan (Noise) – The pioneering left-field prog flavoured thrash metal
outfit may not be the force they once were back in the day, but hey, a
gig on our doorstep is always something the celebrate. The Canadians are
in London for a show at the Garage on Wednesday 11th August (with Nashville
Pussy and Obiat in support). This is a track off 1988’s Dimension Hatross
album – www.myspace.com/voivod
16: UNIVERS ZERO –
Warrior (Cuneiform) – You see, when a new Univers Zero album lands, everything
else must step aside, tonight we finished with a twelve minute epic from
the band’s new album. See track 7 for more details...
And that was this week's
show. Same time, same place, next week, all being well, Marina in the chai
with er Other Rock Show and things beyond mere 4/4... . www.resonancefm.com
