June 3rd 2011
Charlie
Beddoes is back fronting a new band called ROCK IN YOUR POCKET,
meanwhile Greg Feldwick, otherwise known as SLUGABED has his Ninja Tune
debut ready to go and Barnsley’s GOLDSOUL have some no messing swagger
for you…
ROCK IN YOUR POCKET have
their debut single, Doubtbox,
ready to go on June 6th. The Bristol based band are driven by the voice
of one Charlie Beddoes, one time of Rub Ultra amongst others, she
sings, plays bass and leads the three piece. Charlie is not to be
messed with and who needs a review when you can watch, listen and make
up your own mind, don’t you just love the world wide web of
instantness. There’s three of them in the band, they call it
post-punk gutterdub rock'n'roll, you can call it whatever you want,
sound like a no mess rock band to us, go explore for yourselves, our
work is done here for today…

no
no no, our work is not done here today, there’s still time for words
and reviews and things, here’s a couple of new singles that have caught
our ears this week:
SLUGABED – Moonbeam Rider
(Ninja Tune) – Greg Feldwick AKA Slugabed, newly signed to Ninja Tune
and newly delivering a fresh slice of very bouncy springy left-field
full bodied electronica. This five tracker comes laced with
instrumental funk, electronic soul and a an old school undercurrent of
Jean Michel Jarre in there with the glitch and the deliciously
unobvious bass line. Lots going on under the surface of these
tunes,
lots of rather original ingredients gone in to make some rewarding
left field electronic funk driven refinement. – www.ninjatune.net
GOLDSOUL – Blood Red
(Of National Importance) - Well they’re not exactly breaking any new
musical ground here, and those lyrics about getting up and getting high
and heading for the city of lights may not have that much
depth to them, but then you don’t need ground-breaking depth every
single time do you? Sometimes a healthy slice of primal raw-edged rock
delivered with a big dollop of driving rocking ‘proper’ attitude will
more than do, won’t it? This two track debut is pretty much a
straight down the line no messing rock’n roll stomp, bit of an Oasis
swagger, when Oasis were really going for it in a no nonsense straight
down the line turn-it-up and just rock-out glam-stomp of a way. Bit of
a Primal Scream thing here, bit of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club feel,
BRMC without Goldsoul ever wanting to be American about any of it.
This is simple, big-amped no messing English rock ‘n roll stomp. Anyone remember that vastly underrated band from Liverpool called The Black Velvets? Put out a handful of great singles and a killer album. GoldSoul are from Barnsley, they rock, they could almost be The Black Velvets (that is meant as massive compliment),. Love this, they got a nice big primal glam stomp going, they got their amps humming, they’re cranking it out and they got it all down with just the right amount of swagger, energy and knowing attitude, they’re a blast, they rock, simple as that – sometimes simple as that is all you need. Not heard of them until a couple of hours ago, hope there’s more than just this killer debut single, hope they back it all up live…
